The Daily Money

Friday, August 5

Happy Friday, Daily Money readers. Jayme Deerwester back with you.

Good news: U.S. employers added 528,000 jobs in July as hiring surged despite high inflation and the unemployment rate dropped one-tenth of a percentage point to 3.5%.

Bad news: Last week, initial jobless claims – a gauge of layoffs – rose to the highest level since November based on a four-week moving average. Tech giants such as Oracle, Amazon, Netflix and Robinhood have all announced significant job cuts recently. Also, hiring has been expected to downshift now that the U.S. has recouped all 22 million jobs lost in the health crisis.

Carnivores come for Cracker Barrel over new meatless sausage option

Now that we've dispensed with minor stuff like the country's economic health, let's get to the really serious issue dividing the country: putting plant-based sausage on the Cracker Barrel menu. While vegans and vegetarians mostly expressed gratitude for the new protein option, the announcement prompted prompted anger and resentment from devout carnivores.

"Are you kidding me?" one commenter wrote on the restaurant chain's Facebook page. Who do you think your customer base is?"

"YOU CAN TAKE MY PORK SAUSAGE WHEN YOU PRY IT FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS," said another. "DON'T TREAD ON MY PORK!"

Naturally, other commenters were there with metaphorical popcorn in hand to watch the latest episode of the culture wars. But not everyone was eating it up.

"Y'all really need to grow up. Absolutely no one asked you to eat this," one commenter pointed out, calling out the complainers. "I won't eat it, but I am glad the options are there for those who will. Imagine being this triggered by breakfast. You must be ready to stroke out by supper."

It's, uh, not been a good week around here.  But I'll try to end the week on a positive note and to accomplish that, I'm calling on Monty Python.

"Some things in life are bad. They can really make you mad. Other things just make you swear and curse. When you're chewing on life's gristle, don't grumble, give a whistle. And this'll help things turn out for the best."

Here's hoping they're right.
