Every so often, Rachel Barber reports, a new set of economic buzzwords enters — or reenters — the zeitgeist. This spring, terms like the "K-shaped economy" and "stagflation" are having a moment. 

Here are some terms that are defining the American economy in 2026.

Will a new tax chase away California's billionaires?

A proposal to tax California's billionaires is testing the limits of America's enthusiasm for making the über-rich pay their share. 

The so-called "billionaire tax" would raise an estimated $100 billion through a one-time, 5% "wealth" tax on roughly 200 California billionaires. The idea is polling well among California voters, but some of the state's most prominent billionaires say they'd rather move than pay it

FICO scores are falling. Does that matter?

The national average FICO score has fallen, Medora Lee reports, meaning that the typical American consumer has slightly worse credit now than a year or two ago.

Yet, paradoxically, more Americans have really good credit. The conflicting metrics emblemize our K-shaped economy.
