| Friday's blockbuster jobs report showing 517,000 employment gains in January and a 3.4% unemployment rate – a 54-year low – was still generating buzz three days later. |
| Although the report eased fears of a recession in the short term, it sank stocks on fears it would keep inflation higher for longer and prompt the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates more sharply. And that, ironically, could increase the odds of a downturn. |
| Some economists, though, say a booming jobs report should be a good thing for markets. They note robust job gains don't necessarily mean faster, stronger wage growth and hefty pay increases don't necessarily lead to higher prices. |

| With tax season in full swing, the House's new Republican majority is proposing some out-of-the box ideas for simplifying the tax code. |
| The Fair Tax Act of 2023. Introduced by U.S. Rep. Early "Buddy" Carter, R-Ga., it proposes a national sales tax on the use or consumption of taxable property or services. The tax would replace income taxes, payroll taxes and estate or gift taxes and effectively amount to 30%. |
| The bill faces an uphill battle even in the GOP-controlled House and President Biden has said he would veto it. |
