The Daily Money

Friday, February 3

Well, we made it! It's Friday and it's Charisse Jones with the Daily Money headlines to take you into the weekend.

Despite inflation and worries about a coming recession, employers added 517,000 jobs in January, and the unemployment rate dropped from 3.5% to 3.4%, the lowest level in 54 years.

The number of added jobs was well above the 185,000 expected by economists surveyed by Bloomberg. But the upbeat report means the Federal Reserve will probably not put the brakes on interest rate hikes any time soon. The Fed increased rates by a quarter of a percentage point this week in its latest move to try to slow job and wage growth to bring down inflation.

More blood pressure pills are recalled

Several lots of Quinapril, a blood pressure medication, were recalled last week because the tablets could raise the risk of getting cancer, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The four lots recalled by drug maker Lupin Pharmaceuticals Inc. could contain a heightened level of nitrosamine impurity, N-Nitroso-Quinapril, that exceeds the level considered acceptable to consume in a given day.

Another drug manufacturer recalled the same medication in October because of similar concerns about the cancer risk.
