Severe storms wreak havoc for multiple states

Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes battered multiple, damaging homes and causing power outages.

Damien Henderson, USA TODAY

Happy Fri-YAY! It's Medora, from Chicago, again.

Today, I have weather on my mind. It's a beautiful morning here, but I know it's about to turn very quickly and I'm bracing myself. All of next week, starting Sunday, is forecast to be near 90-plus degrees! That probably sounds like an outright cold spell for many of you this summer, but Chicagoans have been pretty lucky this year.

We're also entering hurricane season. Southern California and areas near there are expected to be pummeled with rain from Hurricane Hilary this weekend. AAA says between the heat and potential hurricanes, we could see gas prices rise again. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas hit $3.87, a 10-month high, this week. Good thing, summer road trip season is coming to a close.

Something else we're expected to see again is smoke from Canadian wildfires. It looks like parts of the U.S. will start getting hazy again soon, with people in Canada's Northwest Territories asked to evacuate immediately.
