Why American farmers are feeling squeezed |
It's been a tough year for America's farmers. Production costs are up, while prices for soybeans and corn have taken a nosedive since their 2022 peaks. |
"The squeeze is real from both sides of the equation," Brian Duncan, an Illinois farmer and president of the Illinois Farm Bureau, told USA TODAY. | The National Corn Growers Association calls it an "economic crisis hitting rural America," noting this is the third consecutive year farmers have faced widening negative profit margins. Trade groups say tariffs could make the situation even worse by driving up the cost of imports and prompting retaliatory action from countries that purchase from the U.S. | Heath Donner's farm during last year's peanut harvest. How to talk to your teen about money | A recent survey of 1,000 parents of children ages 14 to 18, found only 8% think their teenagers are "extremely prepared" to manage their finances in adulthood. About half of respondents admitted they hadn't talked with their teens about sticking to a budget, managing bank accounts, staying out of debt, or building good credit. |
Still, 98% of parents surveyed said they believe it is their responsibility to teach their kids how to manage finances and 97% think it's one of the greatest gifts they can give their children. |
