Morning!
We’re well past the old POV that brain decline is inevitable, though we’re still always certainly learning more about what that really means. New research reveals that eating a diverse diet may play a significant role—more on that below.
Plus, I’m sharing all the resources you need to start strength training or level-up your routine, no matter your current level of fitness.
Read through and then be sure to share this newsletter with a friend who is focused on their diet & fitness goals. —Ailsa Cowell, M.S., health editor |

Eat like this for a better brain & calmer outlookNew research found a certain way of eating may be one piece of the puzzle to great cognition at any age, with mood benefits as an added bonus:¹
- Researchers assessed four different dietary patterns in 3,181 adults.
- Mono-diet: A relatively limited variety of foods
- Vegetarian diet: A pattern centered primarily around plant foods
- High-protein diet: Greater emphasis on protein-rich foods
- Diversified diet: A broader variety of foods
- Results showed that those who ate a diversified diet had the lowest levels of anxiety and the highest levels of cognitive function compared with the other dietary groups.

Bodies are cool… muscle fibers explainedYour muscles are made of bundles of individual fibers, and which ones fire depends entirely on the task at hand. Slow-twitch fibers are the marathoners: packed with mitochondria, built for endurance, and they'll keep firing for a long time without tiring. Fast-twitch fibers are the sprinters, generating power quickly but burning out faster.²
At the microscopic level, movement itself comes down to two proteins, actin and myosin, sliding past each other like interlocking fingers pulling closer together; that's literally what a muscle contraction is. Most muscles are a mix of both fiber types, and the ratio is partly genetic, which is part of why some people are built for distance running and others for explosive power.
