Hi all!
Today’s newsletter dives into nuts—specifically, how peanuts may support metabolic health. I honestly grew up disliking basically all nuts (I was the girl with cream cheese & jelly instead of peanut butter), but I’ve taught myself to like them as I’ve gotten older.
You'll understand why when you read all the health benefits detailed below. Plus, I’ve gathered some links to my favorite low-impact workout. Happy reading! —Sela Breen, assistant health editor Send this to your friend who is already eating peanut butter straight from the jar. |

This nut may lower your diabetes riskPeanuts have a unique nutrient profile—they are the single biggest dietary source of very long-chain saturated fats, and high in monounsaturated fat. Researchers have found this unusual fat profile leaves a distinct signature in the blood.¹
All this talk of fat may make you think this blood signature is a bad thing, but researchers found that…
- People with higher peanut signature scores had a modestly lower risk of type-2 diabetes.
- Each one-standard-deviation increase in the score came with roughly 11% lower odds of developing type-2 diabetes.²
BMI accounted for an estimated 89% of the diabetes risk reduction. In practical terms, this means the metabolic benefit from high peanut consumption may run mostly through body composition, likely because peanuts are filling enough that people eat less of something else.³

Why 70% of American kids quit sports by age 13 |
|
By some estimates, more than 30% of kids in the U.S. who play organized sports now play just one sport, year-round. Kids are forced to choose “their sport” before age 10, because most people believe that focusing on one sport at any sign of unique talent is the right call. In the latest solo episode of the mindbodygreen podcast, we dive into what the research says about specializing at a young age, which hits close to home for Jason as a former Division 1 athlete. Spoiler alert: the results are less beneficial than you would expect.
