Good morning!
Today I’m thrilled to introduce board-certified endocrinologist David Berger, M.D., as our guest editor today, explaining why a DEXA scan might be the missing tool in your body recomposition efforts. Hint: It’s much more than a bone density tool. Read on to learn more! —Ailsa Cowell, M.S., health editor |

The missing piece for your body recomposition efforts |
|
 |
Having body recomposition goals is one thing, but understanding your baseline and tracking progress over time will show you what your efforts are really contributing to. One underutilized test can help you get a better picture on your body composition and where excess fat may be hiding.
A DEXA offers precision measurements of muscle mass in different areas of your body, as well as the different kinds of fat in your body (it’s not just for bone density):
- Subcutaneous Fat: the fat you generally think of and can feel on your body, this kind of fat sits just under your skin and can be found all throughout the body. It accounts for approximately 80% of your body fat. While it produces some hormones, its purpose is cushioning, heat production, and energy storage.
- Visceral Fat: This is the fat that has greater impacts on your health. It functions as an endocrine gland and higher proportions of visceral fat is associated with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and the conditions that come along with it such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and heart disease.
Muscle mass measurements are compartmentalized, meaning you can see how much muscle mass you have in each arm, leg, etc., offering data to support the areas that need the most improvement.
But this is only the highlight reel of what a DEXA can do for body recomposition; learn more here. —David Berger, M.D., Endocrinology & Internal Medicine +Mission: body recomposition

Somewhere along the way, we lost track of the fact that what happens in the bathroom offers us valuable insights into total body health. Now, we can get a better understanding of our baseline bowel habits and what they mean for our overall well-being with Kohler Health’s Dekoda:
- You simply attach to your toilet, use the bathroom, and see your insights in the Kohler Health app.
- Dekoda uses advanced optical sensors and spectroscopy (technology that reads specific wavelengths of light) to create a detailed reading of what you leave behind.

A way to finally understand your digestion |
|
 |
We have plenty of cultural assumptions about what “healthy” looks like, but digestive patterns can vary significantly from person to person. Frequency and consistency can signal important things about our health, but first you need to know what’s “normal” for you. Kohler Health’s Dekoda is designed to help you do exactly that. |
