Good morning, Daily Money readers. We made it through the first full work week of 2022! Jayme Deerwester here with you this frigid Friday.

Hiring slowed sharply for a second straight month in December, with employers adding just 199,000 jobs, as the omicron variant began driving COVID-19 cases higher. The unemployment rate fell, which is calculated from a different survey from 4.2% to 3.9%, the Labor Department said Friday.

For all of 2021, the economy added a record 6.4 million jobs, or 537,000 a month. So far, the U.S. has recouped 18.8 million, or 84%, of the 22.4 million jobs lost early in the pandemic, leaving it 3.6 million jobs shy of its pre-crisis level.

Good morning and happy Thursday, Daily Money readers. Jayme Deerwester back with you – again. And no, you're not imagining things: this is the second send of Thursday's newsletter. The earlier one had an incorrect link that has since been corrected.

ANOTHER YEAR, ANOTHER ROUND OF STORE CLOSURES. On Wednesday, Macy's and Bed Bath & Beyond both announced they would shutter more stores in 2022. Days into the new year, the department store chain confirmed a new round of store closures to USA TODAY. Macy's Inc., which also runs Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury, identified six Macy's and one Bloomingdale's Outlet store that will shutter in this round.

In this latest round of Bed Bath & Beyond closures, New York will lose seven stores, five California stores will close and four Washington state locations. Arizona, Georgia, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Texas will lose two stores apiece. Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin and West Virginia are each losing one store.
