Tuesday, January 4

Good morning and happy Tuesday, Daily Money readers. Hope your post-holiday re-entry went smoothly. Jayme Deerwester back with you.

Former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes was convicted on four counts of fraud and conspiracy Monday, ending a lengthy trial that has captivated Silicon Valley. From 2010 to 2015, Holmes was a Silicon Valley sensation, and her fortune was once estimated at $4.5 billion.

She had raised $900 million in funding based on a false promise that Theranos' technology would revolutionize health care with simple, cheap and easily accessible blood testing, requiring only a finger prick instead of multiple vials of blood to check for multiple health issues.  Holmes, 37, could face up to 20 years in federal prison.

💡 TODAY'S INSIGHT:  Looking to trim your wireless expenses in 2022?  Your wireless carrier's site won't advertise this possibility, but you can drop your service and keep using its network by switching to a reseller that uses the same company's network, such as Visible (Verizon), Metro (T-Mobile) or Cricket and Consumer Cellular (AT&T).  But you have to be prepared to live without some perks.

Other stories you won't want to miss:

Are flights still being canceled?   Yes. More than 1,100 cancellations so far Tuesday.

'That's what I get for $7,500?'   Used-car buyers balk at astronomical prices.

Food news.  Starbucks brings back the pistachio latteChipotle rolls out plant-based chorizo.

Turning 65 in 2022?  You're eligible to claim Medicare and Social Security. But should you?

End of an era.  Royal Caribbean Group's Richard Fain steps down after 33 years as CEO.

MOOD MUSIC. Today's song comes from Pink Floyd's David Gilmour and goes out to anyone who found themselves stuck in an airport over the past few days: "There's no way out of here. When you come in, you're in for good."

Elizabeth Holmes leaves the federal court in San Jose, Calif. on Sept. 8, 2021.

The Daily Money: Should you sell your Disney stock?

Today's top stories from USA TODAY Money. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Monday, January 3

Good morning, happy Monday and welcome to the first business day of 2022, Daily Money readers. Jayme Deerwester back with you after vacation and going slightly overboard on kitchen equipment at various end-of-year sales. I regret nothing – especially not my blue-steel KitchenAid mixer, which I have dubbed Derek Zoolander.

COULD BE WORSE. NOT SURE HOW, BUT IT COULD BE. Disney is at risk of losing control of some of the company's most beloved characters  in 2022. Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore, Tigger, Piglet, Kanga and Roo are scheduled to enter the public domain. These iconic stories and characters are woven into the tapestry of Disney's success, delighting generations of fans in the process. But the sun is setting on copyright protection for the earliest of the stories, which first appeared in 1926.

By the way, if you have Disney stock in your retirement portfolio, don't make this mistake.

Best Buy bargains. See the store's deals on top-tier gear from Samsung and Sony.

Oh no.  Are flight cancellations and delays the new normal this winter?

MOOD MUSIC. Financial advisers would probably caution against Sting's plan of action here, but I'm starting out the new year with "Brand New Day" anyway: "Why don't we turn the clock to zero, honey? I'll sell the stock, we'll spend all the money. We're starting up a brand new day."
