Americans are expected to shell out a record $12.2 billion on Halloween candy, costumes and decorations, topping pre-COVID levels, according to the National Retail Federation. The previous all-time high was $9.1 billion in 2017.

Partly driving the spooky spending spree is a sugar shortage that's nudging candy prices higher as well as inflation overall.

Costumes are projected to bring in the most revenue at $4.1 billion.
