ALL THE MONEY NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Mon Mar 31 2025

Daniel de Visé Personal Finance Reporter

Good morning! It's Daniel de Visé with your Daily Money. Happy Monday! Today, we'll pose questions about some major Trump administration initiatives.

President Trump's widening global trade war has clobbered the stock market, raised the odds of a recession and started to push up inflation for American households. Trump says the ultimate prize – spurring more production in the U.S. and reclaiming the nation's status as a manufacturing stronghold – will be worth the turmoil.

Waste and fraud in Social Security?

A 2024 audit of the Social Security program found $72 billion in improper payments to Americans between 2015 and 2022. That sounds like a lot of money, until you consider that Social Security paid out $8.6 trillion in benefits in those years. And some "improper" payments were underpayments. Also, most overpayments were recovered.

Trump officials are turning the federal benefits program upside down, looking for waste and fraud.

$13 a dozen? Tracking eggflation

Warning: Bad puns ahead.

Soaring egg prices have left U.S. consumers scrambling and shell-shocked.

The spike in prices has largely been about bird flu, which has caused major losses among the egg-laying stock in the U.S. Supply is down; demand is up.

With the constant barrage of stories about eggflation, it can be hard to keep up or know where to shop. Worry not − a team of USA TODAY reporters surveyed egg prices at five major grocery chains from across the country. Here's what they found.
